The Berwick Turtle (2025)

As with so many myths echoes can be found across many different cultures and religions. So it is with the Cosmic or World Turtle. While developing this character I thought how Berwick seems like the whole world at times. A microcosm, very remote, stranded ‘twixt the Thistle and the Rose.’

Looking at sea turtles I noted how they share colouring and textures with the Town walls. The old masonry looks like scales. I imagined Berwick, represented by a number of the iconic buildings set upon its back, would be this Turtle’s load.

The print is a reproduction of the original displayed as part of the Mythical Monsters of the Sea exhibition.
